Financing a program to engage displaced youth for peace and sustainable development
On 2 December 2016 Ambassador Seidenberger and Executive Director of UNITAR Nikhil Seth signed an agreement worth 100.000 euros with UNITAR to support their Peace and Conflict Prevention Program.
There are 3 components in the program for displaced youth:
1. Youth engagement for peace and sustainable development - Strengthened capacity of actors at the community level, including youth, to better protect youth at risk of being recruited by extremist groups;
2. Psychological first aid - Strengthened awareness of actors at the community level (both within refugee communities and host communities) of psychological trauma, its origins, manifestations, and consequences, as well as of effective techniques to deal with it in the short-, medium- and long-term.
3. Conflict Resolution and Peace Education - Strengthened knowledge and skills of young people to address conflicts in their immediate environment by peaceful means
The project addresses refugee communities in host countries (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon), especially community leaders and young people positioned to multiply knowledge and skills throughout the community. Furthermore, UNITAR and partners will look into options for engaging key actors in the host communities in order to ensure long-term sustainability of the capacity building efforts
