The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein received ambassador Leendertse on 22 March on the occasion of her first courtesy call to Palais Wilson. Zeid welcomed the constructive role Germany plays in protecting international human rights and especially its willingness to take on responsibility in the UN Human Rights Council.
Zeid and Leendertse signed an agreement on the payment of a first tranche of 2.5 million Euros. This payment is part of the regular annual support by Germany for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). With this voluntary contribution OHCHR field offices and the work of special rapporteurs is financed, among other things. For 2017, Germany is planning on contributing a total amount of 5 million Euro. In addition, Germany will support individual OHCHR projects this year.
