From June 6 until June 23, 2017, the 35th regular meeting of the Human Rights Council (HRC) takes place in Geneva under the presidency of the Ambassador of El Salvador, H.E. Maza Martelli.

Since the Human Rights Council succeeded the “Commission on Human Rights” in 2006, it has been the main United Nations body entrusted with the protection and promotion of Human Rights. To reach these goals, the HRC is provided with different instruments, such as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) or the appointment of Special Rapporteurs and commissions of inquiry.

In the 35th meeting and below the famous ceiling of the “Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room”, designed by the artist Miguel Barceló, the 47 elected member states will again discuss pivotal matters of Human Rights as well as Human Rights violations.

After the presentation of the Annual Report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, top-ranking politicians from member states present their views on the current state of Human Rights worldwide. The following weeks’ discussions focus on topics like extrajudicial killings, women’s and migrant’s rights as well as the effects of terrorism and climate change on the enjoyment of Human Rights. Furthermore, the Council discusses the situations in specific country contexts, like in Belarus, Eritrea, Myanmar, Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire, Syria and Ukraine.

Germany, together with the Philippines, presents a resolution against trafficking in persons, especially women and children. Moreover, Germany is among the eleven co-initiators of a resolution on the situation of Human Rights in Syria.
