“What I was trying to do was to find out what happens after the arrival of the refugees, in Greece, Italy or Germany, when the spotlight on their dramatic journey has faded and the daily grind begins. Those people are full of hopes, they wish to make a new start.” With these words, the renowned German photographer Herlinde Koelbl describes her motivation to dedicate herself as an artist and journalist to the refugee situation in Europe which still persists after its climax in 2015.
In her current project she has captured refugees in their everyday life, in emotionally moving and detailed photos as well as in a video format, from their arrival on the shores of Greece and Italy until Germany.
The exhibits are supplemented by a documentation of Germany’s engagement in regions of origin of the refugees.
The exhibition is travelling with the support of the Federal Foreign Office. It was shown in Strasbourg, Nancy, Luxembourg, Berlin and Munich, and will be presented in New York in September 2017 as part of Germany's candidacy for a seat at the United Nations Security Council.
