Sven Alkalaj : "The UNECE will become the Pride of the UN System"
This is what the new UNECE Executive Secretary, Mr. Sven Alkalaj of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who had taken office on 10 April, declared when he intro-duced himself on the occasion of the first ExCom meeting he attended on 17 April 2012.
Dynamic and radiant in the light of the tasks ahead of him the new Executive Secretary sketched out ideas. He conveyed his intention to push for the strengthening of economic integration of the transition countries in the ECE region. He would aim at building consensus among the member States and work closely with their representatives. Mr. Alkalaj referred to UNECE as a regional Economic Commission functioning efficiently and producing outputs that are practical and useful in everyday life of the populations of the member States and beyond the boundaries of UNECE. He did regret however that UNECE currently was still little known and held out that the Secretariat would work on a communication strategy to make the work of UNECE better known to the public at large.
Mr. Sven Alkalaj previously served as Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Belgium, the United States of America and NATO and was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina prior to his appointment as new Executive Secretary of UNECE by the UN Secretary-General in March 2012. The representatives of the member States, among them the EU and Germany, welcomed Mr. Alkalaj, pledged readiness to collaborate with a view to achieve the goals mentioned and wished him well and a shillful hand in the discharge of his duties.
