GFATM Board Meeting: Positive Results
At its spring meeting on 10-11 May 2012 the Board of The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) took decisions to set the course for the future of the GFATM. A new financial forecast shows available funding for the 2012-14 period estimated at USD 1.6 billion. This allows to commit an amount of over USD 600 million to what is called the „Transitional Funding Mechanism“ (providing short-term funding of programmes in the concluding phase). Implementation of the new funding model of the GFATM is to be accelerated. A special Board meeting is to be convened for that purpose in September.
Another important outcome was an agreement on the selection process for the appointment of a new Executive Director of the GFATM. It was decided to set up a nine-member committee composed of six Board members and three independent high-ranking experts. Until the September meeting this committee shall if possible produce and submit to the Board a short-list of up to four suitable candidates (of which at least two shall be women). Germany has successfully proposed Mrs Ursula Eid (Green Party Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), a former Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, as an independent Committee member.
